UPE Tackles Workload Challenges, Resolving Issues for Reading Recovery Teachers

UPE Achieves Balance: Addressing Workload Challenges for Reading Recovery Teachers

The Union of Professional Educators (UPE) has successfully resolved the challenges faced by Reading Recovery teachers, easing the burden of excessive lessons. This intervention comes as a relief for educators who were grappling with an overwhelming workload, impacting the quality of education provided to students.

The UPE’s intervention highlights the significant burden faced by educators, who were expected to handle more than six lessons per day. The inclusion of six Reading Recovery (RR) lessons, along with additional lessons, imposed a heavy workload on teachers. However, thanks to the involvement of the UPE, this issue is now effectively addressed.

Previously, teachers faced time constraints due to the various tasks associatd with each lesson. Recognising the need for a balance between lesson demands and instructional quality, the UPE intervened in the matter to streamline lesson logistics, enabling teachers to prioritise focused instruction and student learning.

It became evident that the Ministry’s intention did not align with what our members indicated, but the problem stemmed from miscommunication among several departments within the Ministry.

The Ministry has now circulated guidelines to make Reading Recovery lessons more flexible and less burdensome, thereby allowing teachers to implement complementary lessons as well.

“Miscommunication within the Ministry caused confusion, but the UPE stepped in to clarify and resolve the issues faced by our teachers.”

Members of the UPE are encouraged to invite other colleagues to join the union boy visiting upe.mt and to seek help they are to email the union on info@upe.mt or call on. 99946582 or 21221252
