The Union of Professional Educators (UPE) categorically refutes the Malta Union of Teachers’ (MUT) recent assertion that it holds an absolute majority in the childcare and kindergarten grades at San Andrea School. This claim, is now entirely obsolete due to the resignation of ALL MUT members.
Resignations Nullify MUT’s Majority
Weeks ago, ALL MUT members working in San Andrea Child Care, formally resigned their membership, citing systemic failures in communication, representation, and support from the MUT. These resignations, submitted directly to MUT leadership. Despite repeated emails to MUT President Marco Bonnici seeking a reply, no acknowledgment of their resignation was provided, further eroding trust.
Consequently, MUT no longer holds a majority in the childcare sector as confirmed by updated membership records. The UPE now represents the absolute majority of educators in this sector at San Andrea School.
MUT Lacks Authority to Negotiate
The UPE emphasizes that the resigning members explicitly revoked MUT’s mandate to negotiate on their behalf. Any collective agreement negotiations conducted by MUT for these grades are illegitimate, as affected educators no longer recognize the MUT’s representation.
Call for Transparency
The UPE urges San Andrea School management to halt any possible negotiations with MUT for childcare staff. Educators are encouraged to await further instructions, which remains committed to transparent communication, proactive advocacy, and equitable representation.
