The Union of Professional Employees (UPE) publicly denounces MCAST’s refusal to rectify a glaring case of workplace inequity, in direct violation of Chapter 452, Article 27 of Maltese law, which enshrines equal pay for work of equal value.
An employee employed at MCAST for over a dacade has endured years of discriminatory grading and pay, despite performing duties identical to higher-grade positions advertised internally. Documentation confirms the employee’s role aligns fully with senior counterparts, yet MCAST has resorted to shifting goal posts after the employee concerned had raised the issue with management and brought attention to this anomaly.
Following a DIER-mediated conciliation meeting, MCAST proposed a demeaning “solution” which does not render justice to the fact that the employee in question has already satisfied the requisites and did the same work of the employees senior counterparts.
This offer blatantly disregards legal obligations and perpetuates exploitation. The UPE unequivocally rejected MCAST “solution”.
According to the UPE, MCAST’s conduct reflects a dangerous contempt for labor rights. The institution undermines Malta’s labor laws and ethical workplace standards.
The UPE will now pursue justice at the Industrial Tribunal, demanding accountability and immediate redress. This case is a fight to uphold the principle that no employee should be penalised for administrative shortcomings.
The UPE remains unyielding in its mission to defend employees’ rights, dignity, and fair treatment.
