One Collective Agreement, Several Interpretations: Church School LSEs Voice Concern Over Salary Discrepancy

Church School Learning Support Educators (LSEs) find themselves in a difficult position, particularly those holding a full, relevant qualification at MQF Level 6 or higher. These LSEs are eligible for placement on Salary Scale 9 upon entry. Crucially, the collective agreement further stipulates that after five (5) years of satisfactory service within Salary Scale 9, these employees shall progress to Salary Scale 8 as Learning Support Educators.

The text is clear as daylight. Unfortunately, it seems there are several interpretations of the agreement.

Lets make it clear, the Church School Authorities are not at fault here. The core issue stems from an alleged misinterpretation of the agreement that the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) seems to be promoting.

It seems that the Union who negotiated/agreed and signed the agreement does not comprehend its own writing. After realising that they might have made a mistake, they are now trying to salvage something from the mess that they themselves have created.

Who suffers this injustice?

Ultimately, it is you, the LSEs. While others may be occupied with matters unrelated to core union duties, you are the ones receiving less salary than your counterparts in State Schools.

Sources indicated that in September all Educators in Church Schools with the exception of LSEs due to pending direction, will be receiving their dues.

In the meantime we hope that an agreed position will be determined soon.
